The Invisible Man | Review

The movie starts with great suspense, as we see Cecilia running from a rich millionaire Adrien. It is later revealed that Cee was in an abusive relationship and Adrien was controlling every aspect of her life. He wanted to have a baby with her but she used to take birth control.

Emily tells Cee that Adrien has committed suicide but Cee does not believe this. Adrien was involved in the field of optics and had ‘apparently’ created a suit which made him invisible. The wrath of the invisible man begins as he starts showing signs of himself to Cee. We are introduced to Tom who is Adrien’s brother and lawyer and he says that he hates Adrien as much as her.  One thing I love about this movie is that they pan the camera to just an empty frame so, we as viewers are to imagine how the invisible man looks for ourselves. The suspenseful background music just makes it even more thrilling and keeps us on the edge of our seats. He tries to sabotage her relationship with James by attacking Sydney and with Emily by sending her a hateful email posing as Cee and when they meet each other for dinner Adrien kills Emily while making it seem like it was Cee who did it.

I feel this scene was too far fetched as its impossible for one man to pull off this maneuver but visually was fun to watch. The basic premise of the movie is that the invisible man cuts ties from people who Cee loves and gets her secluded making her feeling helpless.

Cee is in a correctional facility where it is revealed that she is pregnant. Cee is in her cell and knows the invisible man is watching her and tries to Hannah Baker herself with a pen she stole from Tom. When she continues hurting herself the invisible man stops her and she repeatedly stabs him with the pen. Now, this whole sequence where the invisible man starts glitching and tries to apprehend Cee is very entertaining because the invisible man is portrayed as a god in combat but in the same time gives us a little bit of that John Wick element where the invisible man decimates the police force whilst being injured.

Cee escapes to her house and calls James on the way. This is where the showdown happens and this was just a stroke of genius. The scene where James is almost beaten to death was done by the actor himself without the help of any stunt double. When the mask is taken off we expected it was Adrien but no it was Tom all along. I did not like this part as this would have given a proper ending to the movie but the director had other things in mind where it is revealed that Adrien never died but he was in a dungeon in his own house. Cee does not believe this and encounters Adrien over dinner demanding the truth that it was him all along and not Tom. She wears the suit which he had hidden and kills Adrien.

We are left with Cee who is finally free but what she did, was it right? I will give Adrien the benefit of the doubt as Tom always hated him and saw the perfect opportunity to strike on the person Adrien presumably loved.

This movie is like a roller coaster ride. It has it’s good and bad. It gives us a thrilling background sound with great camera work with some good writing, plot points, and a good amount of jump scares, but my only complaint is that the invisible man was very much overpowered and it had lazy writing at some parts.
